Music

Head of Department - Mrs R Whitby

The Music Department aims to provide an interesting, vibrant and academically rigorous experience for all our students.

The Music Department is proud of the achievement of its students. Last summer we achieved a 100% pass rate for GCSE students, and we are committed to fostering a love of our subject through the enthusiasm and expertise of our staff.  At the heart of our curriculum is an emphasis on creativity and performance.

Music is about making and listening to music. All year groups cover performing, composing, and listening to a wide variety of music styles: popular music, world music, and classical music.

 A Culture of Performance

HGSS is proud to present concerts each year and all students are welcome to perform.  We have many peripatetic teachers coming into school to deliver lessons on all instruments.

Extra-curricular

Music is a busy department when it comes to extra-curricular activities: we have two school bands, choir, and also run a Live Lounge session on a Thursday breaktime in the main hall.  All these groups are well attended and go from strength to strength each week!  All year groups are welcome.

Music Learning Leaders

HGSS is honoured to have very talented musicians in school who not only offer excellent skills within their individual instrumental lessons but are able to develop their musicianship by leading groups such as the school band, as well as having valued roles backstage during concerts.
