Music - A Level

A level Music students will be encouraged to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts, develop an understanding of the place of music in different cultures and contexts, and reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities.

The course is split into 3 main elements – Performance, Composition & Listening.

Pop music and Jazz

  • Courtney Pine, Back in the Day
  • Kate Bush, Hounds of Love

 Fusion

  • Debussy, Estampes
  • Anoushka Shankar, Breathing Under Water

 New Directions

  • Kaija Saariaho, Petals for Violoncello and Live Electronics
  • Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring

Examinations

Exam Board: Edexcel

Performance

8 minute live performance (it can be solo or ensemble or a mix of both)

Composition

1 composition set to a brief by the exam board (40 marks) & 1 Bach Chorale (20 Marks)

Exam

3 listening questions, 1 dictation question, 2 essay questions 2 hour 10 minute exam.

GCSE Music Grade 6+
